k film

k film is a specific authouring technique for non linear films.  the technique borrows its name from a medical condition connected to memory.  k films are rule-based – the director setting the rules by attaching keywords to the smallest narrative units (snu) of the film.  when being watched the film is created for the viewer in their browser based upon the choices of snu they want to watch next.

i’ve found watching a k film with other people to be the best way to enjoy it.

  • k films are watched on a desktop or laptop computer.
  • they are currently not able to be viewed on a mobile device. (an update on 22nd october 2016 is likely to alter this)
  • a  non linear film consists of a database of snu through which the viewer navigates choosing which units to watch.
  • clicking the small square icon will take the film into fullscreen mode.

my research journey with the format has taken me through an experimental project watching a flag to a version of a walk in opportunistic rising tell. i’ve been able to finish a work began in 2006 entitled  30 words    the snu’s were made at a time when i was questioning what i was doing in my life and how i might adapt. the k film format enabled me to complete the work.

the format is one that i really like.  i see a possibility to create a non linear film in and around the derby silk mill museum of making.

feedback:

Hi Andrew

Great film! I like how you timed the previews – to appear after the
main SNU.

The images are also lovely – I feel like I’m on the adventure with
your gang!

The quality of the images is also very good.
